CARE & MAINTENANCE

How to Care for Titanium Jewelry

The short answer: you do not have to. Titanium is the only jewelry metal that genuinely requires zero maintenance. No polishing. No replating. No removal. Here is what you should know anyway.

Why Titanium Needs No Maintenance

Titanium instantly forms a thin, self-healing layer of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) when exposed to oxygen. This oxide layer is what makes titanium virtually indestructible in everyday conditions. It prevents corrosion, blocks ion migration, and resists chemical attack from sweat, chlorine, saltwater, and common cleaning agents.

If the oxide layer is scratched, it reforms within nanoseconds. This is the same property that makes titanium the material of choice for surgical implants, it remains stable inside the human body for decades without degradation.

Compare this to silver (tarnishes within weeks), gold plate (wears off within months), and stainless steel (can pit in saltwater). Titanium does not degrade. Period.

If You Want to Clean It

Titanium does not need regular cleaning. But if your piece has accumulated dust, sunscreen residue, or gym chalk, here is the process:

01

Run warm water over the piece to loosen any debris.

02

Apply a small amount of mild soap (dish soap works).

03

Rub gently with your fingers. For chain links, work the soap between them.

04

Rinse thoroughly under warm water.

05

Pat dry with a soft cloth. Air drying is fine too.

Do not use abrasive pads, silver polish, or ultrasonic cleaners. They are unnecessary and can alter the brushed finish.

On Scratches

Every metal scratches. Titanium is no exception. But there is an important distinction: when gold scratches, material is displaced and lost, the piece becomes lighter and thinner over years of wear. When titanium scratches, the oxide layer reforms and the structural integrity is completely unaffected.

On brushed titanium, which is our default finish, fine scratches blend into the existing surface texture. Many owners find that the accumulated marks of daily wear give their piece character. A titanium chain that has been worn for three years tells a story that a new-in-box piece cannot.

If you prefer a pristine look, a Scotch-Brite pad drawn in one direction can restore a uniform brushed finish in seconds.

Wear It. Forget It.

Titanium is built for daily wear without removal. Shower with it. Sleep in it. Work out in it. Swim in it. The material does not care. At 4.5 g/cm³, 45% lighter than steel, most owners report forgetting they are wearing it within the first week.

This is by design. We chose Premium Titanium because we believe jewelry should adapt to your life, not the other way around. No maintenance rituals. No jewelry box rotation. Just put it on and live.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does titanium jewelry tarnish?

No. Titanium forms a stable TiO₂ oxide layer that prevents tarnishing, discoloration, and corrosion. Unlike silver, gold plate, or stainless steel, titanium will look the same in ten years as it does on day one.

Can you shower with titanium jewelry?

Yes. Pure titanium is completely unaffected by water, soap, shampoo, chlorine, and saltwater. You never need to remove titanium jewelry for showering, swimming, or any water activity.

Does titanium jewelry turn your skin green?

No. Green discoloration is caused by copper content in brass, bronze, or low-quality gold alloys reacting with sweat. Premium Titanium contains zero copper and zero reactive metals. It cannot cause skin discoloration.

Can titanium jewelry be scratched?

Titanium can develop fine surface scratches with daily wear, like any metal. However, titanium does not lose material when scratched (unlike gold, which wears thin). Scratches on brushed titanium blend into the natural texture and create a lived-in patina that many owners prefer.

How do you clean titanium jewelry?

Warm water and mild soap. Rub gently with your fingers or a soft cloth, rinse, and dry. That is the entire process. No polishing compounds, no ultrasonic cleaners, no special solutions required. Titanium does not react to common cleaning agents.

Can you wear titanium jewelry in the gym?

Yes. Titanium is the ideal gym metal. At 4.5 g/cm³, it is 45% lighter than stainless steel, you may forget you are wearing it. It is completely sweat-proof and will not irritate skin during exercise. The only precaution: remove rings during heavy barbell work to avoid deforming them under extreme grip pressure.

Does titanium jewelry set off metal detectors?

Titanium is paramagnetic, it has extremely low magnetic susceptibility. Light titanium jewelry (chains, bracelets, small rings) typically does not trigger standard walk-through metal detectors. Larger pieces may occasionally register, but titanium is fully MRI-safe, unlike ferromagnetic steel.

Can titanium jewelry be resized?

Titanium rings cannot be easily resized by traditional jewelers because titanium requires specialized tooling to cut and machine. This is why correct sizing is important at purchase. Chains and bracelets are not affected by this limitation.
