Large pendants, dog-tag style
How To Measure Your Neck
Take a piece of string or a cloth tape measure. Loop it around the base of your neck where you want the chain to sit, not tight against the throat, but resting where the chain would naturally fall. Mark the join, lay flat, and measure in inches.
That measurement is your neck circumference. To convert to chain length, add 2–4 inches depending on how you want the chain to sit. A neck of 16 inches with a +4-inch drop = 20" chain length, sitting at the collarbone.
What Affects Length Choice
Frame size, taller, broader men should size up. The chain has more chest area to span, and a too-short chain looks like it's choking.
Chain width, wider chains (8mm+) look better at slightly longer lengths because the visual weight needs room to sit. A 10.5mm Cuban at 18" looks crowded; at 22" it has the space to read.
Shirt collar style, for dress shirts where the chain should sit hidden under the collar, 20" works for most men. For T-shirt wear where the chain is visible, 22"–24" gives a better visual drop.
Pendant, if you plan to wear a pendant, size up from your "chain only" length so the pendant hangs where you want it without the chain sitting too tight.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the standard chain length for men?
20 inches (50cm) is the standard. It sits at or just below the collarbone for most men and works with both T-shirts (visible) and dress shirts (hidden under collar). If you are unsure, choose 20", it is the most-bought length in the men’s necklace category for a reason.
What length chain should a tall man wear?
Tall or broader-framed men (over 6'0", over 200lb) often prefer 22" (55cm). It compensates for the proportionally larger neck and chest area so the chain still sits at the collarbone rather than choking at the throat. If you are over 6'2" or have a notably broad frame, consider 24" (60cm).
How is a 24-inch chain worn?
24" (60cm) sits mid-chest on most men. It works for layering with shorter chains, for wearing over a T-shirt where you want the chain visible, and for pendants designed to hang at sternum level. It is generally not the right length for a single chain worn under dress shirts, the chain ends up hidden below the chest.
How do I measure for the right chain length?
Two methods. (1) Use an existing necklace: lay it flat and measure end-to-end. (2) Use a string: tie a soft string loosely around your neck where you want the chain to sit, mark the join, then measure the string flat. Add 1–2 inches to that number for the chain length, you want it sitting at the marked spot when worn, not tight against the skin.
Can chain length be adjusted later?
Some traditional jewelers can shorten gold and silver chains by removing links and re-soldering. Titanium chains are not easily resized because titanium requires specialized tooling that most jewelers do not have, the metal work-hardens under conventional bits. MAISON AERO offers free 30-day length exchanges to mitigate this. Choose carefully or order two lengths to compare and return the one that does not work.
What length should I get for a pendant?
It depends on where you want the pendant to hang. 22" places a pendant just below the collarbone, good for small pendants and crosses. 24" places it mid-chest, good for medium pendants and standard-size charms. 26"+ places it lower chest, good for large pendants and statement pieces. For dog-tag-style pendants, 24"–28" is typical.
